SSSTS stands for Site Supervisors’ Safety Training Scheme. It is a CITB training course for people who supervise construction work and need to understand their legal, practical and safety responsibilities on site.

The course is aimed at construction supervisors, chargehands, team leaders, gangers and people preparing to take on supervisory duties. It can also help experienced workers who need formal training in managing health, safety and welfare on site.

SSSTS is normally delivered as a two-day course by an approved training provider. Candidates complete the course assessment at the end, which commonly includes multiple-choice questions and may include a trainer-led or written safety exercise depending on the current course requirements.

The syllabus covers site supervision roles, CDM responsibilities, risk assessments, method statements, permits, inductions, inspections, incident reporting and welfare. You must attend the required training and meet the assessment standard set for the current SSSTS course. The assessment tests whether you can apply safety principles to realistic site situations, so revise both legal duties and practical supervisory decisions rather than memorising isolated terms.

The assessment is manageable for candidates who understand everyday construction supervision, but it can be challenging if they are unfamiliar with CDM, risk controls or reporting procedures. Scenario-based questions often require you to identify the safest action, appropriate escalation or correct control measure.

Review the course workbook and focus on why each control is required, including risk assessment, method statements, permits, inspections and emergency arrangements. Practise applying the rules to site scenarios and check that you understand the supervisor’s reporting lines, responsibilities and limits of authority.

An SSSTS certificate is generally valid for five years, after which the relevant refresher training is normally required to maintain it. Check the expiry date on your certificate and confirm current renewal requirements with CITB or your approved training provider.
