IELTS General Training 2026-2027 : 1000 MCQ with Answers

IELTS General Training is an English language test designed mainly for migration, work experience, workplace communication, and some study or training applications. It assesses Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, with the same Listening and Speaking tests as IELTS Academic but different Reading and Writing content.

The test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Listening takes about 30 minutes, Reading 60 minutes, Writing 60 minutes, and Speaking 11–14 minutes. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are normally taken on the same day, while the Speaking test may be scheduled separately.

Each section receives a band score from 0 to 9, and an overall band score is calculated from the four section scores. IELTS does not have one universal pass mark; the required score depends on the university, employer, immigration route, or organisation receiving the result. Scores may be reported in whole or half bands.

Neither test is officially described as easier because they assess different needs. General Training Reading and Writing use more everyday, workplace, and practical contexts, while Academic Reading and Writing focus more on academic content. Your choice should depend on the requirements of the organisation or visa route.

Listening and Reading may include bookings, travel, accommodation, customer service, directions, forms, employment, education, shopping, and complaints. Writing Task 1 is a letter, while Writing Task 2 is an essay. Speaking covers familiar personal topics, a short individual talk, and a discussion with the examiner.

The three written sections take approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes in total: 30 minutes for Listening, 60 minutes for Reading, and 60 minutes for Writing. The Speaking test takes about 11–14 minutes. With IELTS on paper, additional time may be provided to transfer Listening answers.

IELTS General Training is available in paper-based and computer-delivered formats in many locations, although availability depends on the test centre. The content, question types, timing, and scoring are intended to be equivalent. Speaking may be conducted with an examiner in person or through an approved video arrangement, depending on the centre.

Start by taking a timed diagnostic test to identify weaknesses in vocabulary, grammar, comprehension, and time management. Practise each section separately, especially forms and phone messages in Listening, practical texts in Reading, letters in Writing Task 1, and everyday discussion topics in Speaking. Review mistakes carefully and use the public band descriptors to understand how responses are assessed.

Writing Task 1 requires a letter that may be formal, semi-formal, or informal, depending on the situation and recipient. Writing Task 2 requires an essay responding to a viewpoint, problem, argument, or question, and it carries more weight in the Writing score. Both tasks are assessed for task response or achievement, coherence and cohesion, vocabulary, and grammatical accuracy.
